Density of WPC Board - Understanding & Facts

Density of WPC Board

There are numerous debates happening over Density of WPC Board and it needs to be comprehend with the accurate meaning. Density can be counted as per the mass per unit volume, in general. Now the focus is ‘Density of WPC material should be decided and used based on its type of application. WPC board being used in furniture making with 0.55 or 0.60 density are quite adequate. PVC/ WPC boards are used in furniture producing with ‘Screw & Solvent’ method, where solvent bonds PVC materials. Screws also can be used with PVC/WPC board, which will be weld with solvent (Cyanoacrylate) material and creates hard grip between screw and WPC board.

As time passes and screw gets loosen rarely, in this circumstance you can take a tiny piece of PVC/ WPC material, weld it with Cyanoacrylate material and screw it again at the same place. Furthermore, maintenance of WPC material like this is very easy process.

In the above discussion, the most important aspect is ‘Density’, where people are getting confused. Now with ‘Screw & Solvent’ method, you can make panel furniture, but with apply of ‘Solvent Welding’  you can make panel furniture without a screw. This is a very important practice for the carpentry market. You all have seen a plumber fixing one PVC pipe to another PVC pipe - just with that solvent cement. Yes, the same method applicable here with PVC/ WPC board. Don’t forget those pipes are hanging for many years from the terrace to the ground floor of an apartment. It means the worry of density stays only with the panel furniture made with screw fixing.

if you want to make a small/ medium sized shoe rack then 0.45 density board with solvent welding method is perfectly fine, screws not required - so no worry of density here. Wardrobe drawers, small storage units, bathroom vanity, small seating, many furniture objects can be manufactured with 0.45 density & solvent welding, as they don’t require any structural strength in its use.

Yes, in case of large size furniture e.g. Wardrobe, File rack, Kitchen cabinets requires structural strength and here WPC material of 0.55-0.60 density should be applied with screw & solvent method. Similarly, WPC door frame is also best suitable beyond 0.80 density. Higher the density means more core strength, means more compression & tensile strength(screw holding capacity), means higher price also!

At the end, it is quite evident that the density of WPC material should be chosen based on the application & method of use. Customers, carpenters both should be informed/tutored with this, so that 100% termite & waterproof WPC material can be used more cleverly.
